Much appreciated and I think what you write here makes perfect sense.

I think one of the things that’s got a bit lost over in that debate is my first point that I’m tired of reading the same mantras where writers are effectively telling other writers that they’re not writers at all unless that write, write, write.

Like you say here, I think that’s pretty bad. We all have our different ways of approaching our work and it’s all to common for members of the online writing community to take on the role of dictator.

And by that I mean they seem to think they make up the rules, nothing sinister!

I Knew I had a plot problem when I was wrestling that sucker, just could not pinpoint what it was. Usually you have an idea what’s wrong, but have to work till you get there. And if that doesn’t work, try something else. :)

I do usually recognize when I have to stop and think. I can never respond to a revision letter without a day or three of thinking first…

That, on top of being a serious pantser, backfired recently. I think your advice, to just follow your instinct, is right on. There’s almost always a little voice in a writer’s head that will tell them which course a situation calls for.
