I imagine they probably don’t even open any of the stories till after the submission date. It wouldn’t be fair if they opened them before, actually. Most contests wait until all the books/ stories have been entered and the date has passed before they begin opening and sending them out to the judges. Then everything gets sent out at once (and the judges go crazy trying to get through everything before their deadline). I’d relax and start working on something else. :)

I thank you for your post. I was searching to find out the list of winners for a magazine writing contest I entered a few months ago. I checked the site and nothing. I had to submitt my story through email and I checked for a return reciept. To my surprise, I discovered that the magazine opened my story past the submission date. I emailed my story on time. I feel now that my story has no chance. Is this true? Has this ever happened to you?

Interestingly, my first book finaled in the Golden Heart, but didn’t sell. My second book did not final in the GH even though I entered it two different years. But the 2nd book sold. :-) I finaled and won regional RWA contests with both books, which garned requests for the manuscripts. In one, I got a request for the full AND the fee to the RWA national conference – on 5 pages & a 2-page synopsis! I think contests can be useful, as long as the authors don’t overdo them to the point where they lose sight of the big picture. Contests are just one tool to get a request.
